After 108 years!

Sun Aug 22, 2004, 7:39 AM
We've finally got a gold medal!

"Earlier, Nicolas Massu and Fernando Gonzalez breathed some life back into the men's event when they remained on track to win Chile's first-ever Olympic gold medal.

In 108 years of the Olympics, Chile has only ever won three silver and six bronze medals, but that could all change this weekend when Massu and Gonzalez feature in both men's finals.

The 10th-seeded Massu downed Taylor Dent 7-6 6-1 in his singles semi-final and will meet unseeded American Mardy Fish in Sunday's decider.

And if he and Gonzalez can beat Germans Nicolas Kiefer and Rainer Schuettler in tomorrow's doubles final, Massu will have the opportunity to become the first man in 80 years to achieve a golden double at an Olympics tennis competition.

The men's tennis in Athens lost most of its appeal after the mass exodus of stars in the early rounds, including world Nos.1 and 2 Roger Federer and Andy Roddick, along with Carlos Moya, Marat Safin, Juan Carlos Ferrero and Australia's Mark Philippoussis.

But, if nothing else, a Chilean gold medal, would at least guarantee a huge party for the South American nation.

Gonzalez could have ensured an historic gold medal for Chile, but lost 3-6 6-3 6-4 to Fish in their singles semi-final tonight.

He will play Dent in the bronze-medal play-off tomorrow."

Omg, my fingers and toes are crossed and I'm sending all my good vibes to Nicolas Massu so he can win the second gold medal for chile.
